Katie's restaurant on Union Street 6
Alert reader Phil Walter brought this one to my attention. In October 2008 Biden was debating Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin and showed off his familiarity with Wilmington, Delaware:
"All you have to do is to go down Union Street with me in Wilmington and go to Katie's restaurant..."
Here's the video:
As with many of Biden's gaffes, this is a combination of mistakes. First, Katie's Restaurant isn't on Union Street. Second, it's been closed for about 20 years. Ryan Cormier of delawareonline.com has many local details, including a picture of the rusted Katie's sign.
Biden also invites listeners to:
"...walk into Home Depot with me where I spend a lot of time...
You see? He's like you, just a regular guy! Even, dare I say it, a regular Joe.

Tom, here’s a couple more for posteriority:
Joe: “I can see Putin sitting in Moscow saying, ‘Jesus Christ, Iran gets the nuclear weapon, who goes first?’ Moscow, not Washington.”
vs.
AP: “(MOSCOW) Russian news agencies quote the country’s nuclear agency chief as saying a Russian-built nuclear power reactor in Iran is still set to be switched on this year. …Russia is helping Iran build its first nuclear power plant as part of a program Iran says is purely peaceful.”
………………
Joe (running against Obama): “They [China] have a mortgage on our house because Bush mortgaged us to a $1 trillion to them. He is responsible for this. This is outrageous!”
vs.
Joe, working for Obama: “We’re going to go bankrupt as a nation. Now, people when I say that look at me and say, ‘What are you talking about, Joe? You’re telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?’ The answer is yes, that’s what I’m telling you.”
Here’s another one…

His stuff on the VP in the constitution in that debate was way better, imho. As a con law prof and one of the few senators in history to have an act that he sponsored struck down under article I, you’d have thought he’d know his art. I from his art. II, but he apparently cannot distinguish between the two, nor can he restrain himself from bombast despite his lack of knowledge of the contents of either.
@noel, thanks, the “bankrupt as a nation” quote is now the latest entry!
@nemov, thanks, that’s the most recent entry now!
@jamesofengland, yup, that’s the latest post now, thanks!
